Vehicle registrations expire on the exact date listed, not at the end of the month. Renew early!

DIESEL EMISSIONS: Diesel vehicles up to 14,000 pounds require emissions testing as of July 1, 2009. This applies to all initial registrations and renewals. Diesel vehicles are also now eligible to renew online and at kiosks.

HIGHER REGISTRATION FEES: The 2009 Nevada Legislature passed Senate Bill 429 which is effective September 1. This bill slows the depreciation rate motor vehicles are assessed for Basic and Supplemental Governmental Services Taxes. Depending on the age of your vehicle, the slowed depreciation rate may mean an increase in the Governmental Services Taxes. See Registration Fees for more details. Renewals that were due in August or earlier will be charged the higher fees. Alllate renewals are also subject to late fees.

RENEWAL POSTCARDS: In an effort to further reduce costs, vehicle registration renewal notices are now printed on postcards instead of the 8 ½ x 11 paper used in previous years. The Department also now has a special Post Office Box (PO Box 6900) to receive the vehicle registration renewals.

Please be advised the Governmental Services Taxes on your registration renewal notices are correct. See Registration Fees for more details.

Renew online or use any of the options below.

Blue Dot  General Information

A Certificate of Registration and plate decal will be issued each year after fees are paid.  If you keep your address updated, a renewal notice will be mailed directly to you. Nevertheless, if none is received, each owner is still responsible for timely registration renewal. Late fees based on the expiration date are assessed for late renewals. Nevada has no grace period.

Registrations expire on the exact date listed on the registration slip. The registration does not extend through the end of the month. If your registration has expired, you can still renew online. The system will automatically calculate and add in any late fees. You may also use the mail or visit a nearby DMV office to renew in person. If your renewal is more than 15 days late, your expiration date will change.

You may obtain a temporary movement permit if you must drive after your registration is expired, for example, to drive to an emissions testing station. Present the expired registration slip or other proof of ownership at a DMV office.

If you have received a renewal notice for a vehicle you no longer own,  please surrender the plates as outlined in Plate Surrender.  If you do not have the plates, disregard the notice.

DMV Online Services may not be available from 9:30 p.m. to 6 a.m. March 10-13. Services will also be down 9:30 p.m. Saturday, March 13, through early Monday morning, March 15, due to a database conversion. Please renew early. Thank you for your patience.

Internet

It's fast, easy, secure and best of all, no lines! You may renew a vehicle registration with either the access code from the renewal notice or the plate number and last 4 digits of the VIN. Go to Online Renewal.

Choose e-check or debit! We accept electronic checks, debit cards from your checking account, Visa, MasterCard, Discover and American Express. Using e-check or debit saves taxpayer dollars through reduced fees.

Registrations may be renewed online approximately 35 days before expiration and up to 18 months after expiration. The expiration date will change if the renewal is more than 15 days late. The system will automatically calculate and add in any late fees. Registrations expire on the exact date listed, not at the end of the month.

Please note the online system cannot process tax exemptions, waive late fees for non-operation or handle address changes. Renew by mail, fax or in person if any of these apply. We do not issue refunds or send the decal to a temporary address.

Diesel vehicles that require an emissions inspection are now eligible to renew online or at a kiosk. Ask your emissions inspector whether his station is connected to the DMV's Central Database.

Renewals are sent to the address we have on record.  If you did not receive a notice, please review our Online Services FAQs.

Telephone

Telephone renewals are no longer available.

Emissions
Stations

Participating emissions inspection stations can renew your vehicle registration at the same time you get your smog check. Your vehicle record is updated instantly. The decal and registration slip are mailed from Carson City. See Emissions Renewals for a station near you.

Mail/Fax

If you have an address change, tax exemption or other unusual problem, or if you are temporarily outside of Nevada, you should mail your renewal. Enclose the renewal postcard, payment, emissions report if required and any other needed documents.

If you are temporarily outside the state and your vehicle needs an emissions inspection, you may complete this outside Nevada and submit the Emission Control Residency Affidavit.

If you did not receive a renewal notice, please e-mail your name, license plate number and current address for instructions. We may ask you to mail or fax one or more of the following forms:

DMV honors the postmark on mailed renewals. We will not assess late fees if the postmark is on or before the expiration date.

In Person

You may renew in person at any DMV Full-Service office, Express office or County Assessor office which offers vehicle registration. This is suggested only if you have multiple DMV transactions or unusual problems such as a registration suspension.

We do not make appointments. E-mail your plate number and current address first to see whether your renewal can be completed without an office visit.

Larger DMV offices feature self-service renewal kiosks that print and dispense the registration slip and decal. These accept cash and credit cards. You can renew in less than 2 minutes if your registration:

  • has no address change or unusual problems, and
  • is on time or up to 18 months late. Late fees will apply.

Kiosks are available at DMV offices in Las Vegas, Reno, Carson City, Elko, Fallon, Mesquite and Pahrump. Kiosks accept cash, checks and credit/debit cards for payment.

Renewal Kiosk

Kiosks are also available at a number of private businesses in the Las Vegas and Reno areas. Services are identical to those in the DMV offices except they do not accept cash. See Kiosk Services and Locations.

Blue Dot  Late Renewals

Forms Help | Back To Top

Nevada does not have a grace period on expired registrations. DMV is required to charge late fees that consist of taxes and penalties. You must pay the full renewal fees for the coming year and the pro-rated Registration Fee and Governmental Services Taxes for the period of time the vehicle was not registered. Additional penalties are $6 per month on the Registration Fee and 10% of the Governmental Services Taxes (including Supplemental Governmental Services Taxes in applicable counties.)

You may renew online up to 18 months after expiration provided DMV has your correct address and you have no unusual problems such as an insurance lapse or unpaid parking tickets. The system will automatically calculate late fees.

If your vehicle requires an emissions inspection, you must obtain a one-day movement permit to drive the vehicle legally. You may obtain this at any DMV office. Provide proof of ownership, such as the old registration or the current vehicle title. If your vehicle was inoperative during the registration lapse, please notify the DMV.

Vehicle registrations enter "renewal status" approximately 35 days before expiration. If you renew during this period, the expiration date will remain the same and you will be charged fees for a full year.

If you wish to renew early or change your expiration date, you must visit a DMV office. The new expiration date will be set one year from the date of the renewal. You will receive credit for the unused portion of your current registration fees. You will need to complete a new emissions inspection if required for your vehicle and if the last test was completed more than 90 days prior to the renewal.

Blue Dot  Changing License Plates

Forms Help | Back To Top

You must obtain new license plates in person at a DMV Full Service Office or County Assessor which offers vehicle registration services.

If you wish to avoid personalized or specialty plate fees charged on your current plates, you should renew your registration in person and exchange plates at the same time. We do not issue credits or refunds for these fees.

Please renew your registration on time regardless of whether you change plates. You may renew first and change plates at a later date without obtaining a new registration or emissions inspection.

If the new plates you wish to obtain are in stock at the DMV, you should renew the registration, surrender the old plates and obtain the new ones at the same time. Bring the old plates into the office with you.

If the new plates will be custom-ordered, you may order them in person at the same time you renew the registration. Or, you may renew using any method above and order the plates by mail. You would then exchange the plates in person when the new set is ready.

See our License Plates pages for different plate styles and for specific instructions on obtaining the plates of your choice.
