Fatal fire caused by children playing with cigarette lighter
The Office of the Fire Marshal has determined that the Silver Springs fire that occurred on February 24, 1999 at 1135 Banner Way was caused by children playing with a cigarette lighter. The fire was accidental and no charges were filed. The fire claimed the life of a three year old girl and also caused injuries to the mother of the victim.
Juvenile fires are the leading cause of fires in the United States. These types of fire can be avoided by simply keeping all matches and lighters out of reach of children. If you know of a child that is curious or has a fascination with fire, do not hesitate to contact the State Fire Marshal's Office at 687-4290 or your local Fire Department. They can offer many programs that educate children about fire and fire safety.
For further information on this incident, contact Deputy State Fire Marshal Dennis Ely at 687-4290.
