IMMEDIATE RELEASE July 20, 2007
NEWS
FROM: Directors Office 07-007
The Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles, investigating a number of complaints from customers, has found the cause of the problems to be a non-official web site with a very similar web address.
The official web address for the DMV is dmvnv.com. This afternoon, the department was made aware of a small number of customers that have accessed a private site at dmv.nv.com which, in turn, incorporated information from the official site.
Unsuspecting customers who believed they were visiting the official site found they were unable to complete online transactions with the department. The transactions simply failed. There is no indication that any customer’s personal information was compromised.
The company behind dmv.nv.com disabled the site immediately this afternoon upon being notified of the problem. The DMV has taken technical steps to help ensure that its site can no longer be misrepresented.
“We take security and privacy seriously in our web transactions and in all areas of the Department’s operations,” said Director Ginny Lewis. “We constantly watch for this sort of problem but we also ask the public to report anything unusual they may spot when doing business with us.”
