IMMEDIATE RELEASE January 19, 2007
NEWS
FROM: Directors Office 07-002
Operations at the Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles and other state agencies resumed early this afternoon after a statewide computer outage.
A hardware failure at the State Department of Information Technology in Carson City left the DMV unable to process vehicle or driver’s license transactions in its field offices or on its web site or kiosks. The problem in the “Storage Area Network” or SAN came to light this morning and was repaired by about 1 p.m. The DMV computers were down from 9:10 a.m. until 1:40 p.m.
“We regret the inconvenience this has caused our customers,” said DMV Director Ginny Lewis. The department will waive late fees for Friday, January 19th, for customers who tried to complete their transaction during the outage. The customer, however, must appear in person at a DMV office. The renewal transactions on the Internet or at kiosks will charge late fees.
Officials emphasize this was a communications problem and there was no loss of records or data. No personal records of any motorist or citizen were affected, including those who may have completed a DMV transaction early this morning.
DMV offices that are open on Saturdays will be open tomorrow for business.
