Wellington Fire Accidental
Historical Structure Damaged

The Nevada State Fire Marshal's Office has concluded its preliminary investigation into a fire Wednesday, September 13^th, 2000 at the Historical Wellington Mercantile structure in Wellington, Nevada.

Investigators David Dini and Dennis Ely say the fire appears to have been caused by the improper storage of combustible materials next to the building's hot water heater. The heater's pilot light appears to have ignited cardboard and cloth materials.

The blaze spread rapidly due to the age of the structure and the dryness of the lumber.

The State Fire Marshal's office says local fire departments on the scene should be commended for an outstanding job of protecting adjacent structures and the surrounding area.
