Reducible Oversize/Overweight Permits

Nevada has no ports of entry. Cab Card Weight is 80,000 pounds. Maximum Operating Weight is 129,000 pounds with an Oversize/Overweight permit in the vehicle. Carriers must obtain all necessary permits before entering the state.

Registration and Fuel Tax Temporary Permits

DMV Motor Carrier offices issue 24 hour permits (120 hours for buses) for temporary registration and special fuel taxes. Fees for registration are $5 plus 15 cents per mile. Special fuel permits are a flat $30.

New! New Requirements as of July 1, 2009:

  • Out-of state commercial vehicles with a Combined Gross Vehicle Weight Rating of 10,001 pounds or more are now required to get registration permits. (Fuel permits are not required for vehicles under 26,001 pounds unless the vehicle has three axles.)
  • All carriers must obtain their permit(s) before entering the state. You may no longer travel to the first available vendor.

Longer Combination Vehicles

DMV Motor Carrier issues annual permits for vehicles with multiple trailers and reducible loads that exceed 70 feet in length (maximum weight is 129,000 lbs with an LCV permit). See Motor Carrier Office Locations or call (775) 684-4711.

Non-Reducible Over Dimensional Permits

The Nevada Department of Transportation issues permits for over-dimensional vehicles/loads with any of the following characteristics: 

  • Non-reducible vehicles/loads that exceed:
    8 feet, 6 inches in width
    14 feet in height
    10 feet in overhang
    70 feet in length
    80,000 pounds
  • Reducible vehicles/loads that are less than 70 feet in length and exceed 80,000 pounds.
  • Motor trucks that exceed 40 feet in length.
  • Buses that exceed 45 feet in length.

Amber Light Permits

Amber light permits are issued by the Nevada Highway Patrol. Call (775) 684-4622.

Hazardous Materials Permits

Single-Trip

Nevada issues a maximum of one 72-hour permit per 90 days per company. The Nevada Highway Patrol has contracted with ComData to issue these permits at $125 plus a ComData fee. Call (800) 749-6058.

Annual

Carriers must obtain hazmat permits from their base state. Permits for Nevada carriers are issued by the Nevada Highway Patrol. Call (775) 684-4622. Nevada is one of seven states participating in the Uniform State Hazardous Materials Registration and Permitting Program.
