Diesel-powered cars and trucks need an annual emissions test if they:
Please note that the manufacturer's weight rating is used to determine whether an emissions inspection is required. The declared weight rating used to assess registration fees may be different. Both will be listed on your registration renewal notice, which will also indicate whether a smog check is required.
You must have a valid test to complete any original registration or renewal if the vehicle requires a test as listed above. This includes reinstatement of a suspended registration.
Nevada requires used car dealers to issue a valid emissions test, when required, on any vehicle they sell. In private transactions, the test is the buyer's responsibility.
Light duty diesel vehicles undergo testing on a dynamometer. The technician will also perform an opacity test and a visual inspection of the emissions components.
Waiver requirements for vehicles that fail to pass even after repairs are listed in the Diesel Emissions Requirements flier.
The DMV sets the maximum testing fees stations may charge based on an annual survey. Discounts are offered at each station's discretion. Stations which offer registration renewals are allowed to charge an additional $10 fee for this service.

Trucks and buses with a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating of 14,001 pounds or more are not required to undergo annual emissions inspections. However, they must adhere to opacity standards for visible smoke. These standards apply in all 17 Nevada counties and to vehicles traveling from other states as well as those registered in Nevada.

Visible smoke must not block more than the listed percentage of light passing though it. Standards differ depending on the year of manufacture of the engine. Engine families which have been exempted by the California Air Resources Board are also exempt in Nevada. |

Nevada uses the Society of Automotive Engineers J1667 Snap Acceleration Test for exhaust opacity measurements. Emissions control technicians have mobile equipment and conduct courtesy inspections of Nevada-based fleets at the request of fleet owners.
The DMV Compliance Enforcement Division also conducts random road side tests at weigh stations throughout the state and operates an on-the-road diesel enforcement program.
Teams consisting of a sworn police officer and an emissions inspection technician patrol the highways in marked vehicles. They are able to pull over any diesel vehicle, conduct a roadside test and inspection and issue a citation if appropriate.
Violators can be issued administrative citations. Fines are waived for a first offense if the vehicle is repaired and evidence of the repairs is presented to the department within 45 days.
Violators who do not repair the vehicle are subject to fines of $800 or more. DMV can also order a vehicle removed from the highways.
